Microwave Wattage Converter
Package says 3 minutes at 1100 W but your microwave is 700 W? Enter the instructions and your oven’s wattage to get the adjusted cooking time.
Formula
Microwave heating is roughly proportional to energy delivered, and energy = power × time. To deliver the same energy at a different power, scale the time by the ratio of wattages. A lower-wattage oven needs longer; a higher-wattage oven needs less time. The rule is an approximation: magnetron efficiency, turntable size, food shape and starting temperature all play a part, so check the food and add time in short bursts.
Worked example
A frozen meal says 3 minutes at 1100 W. Your microwave is 700 W. t₂ = 180 s × 1100 / 700 = 282.9 s ≈ 4 minutes 43 seconds. If the package also says "stir halfway", do so at about 2:20. Going the other way, 5 minutes at 800 W becomes 5 × 800 / 1200 = 3 minutes 20 seconds in a 1200 W oven.

How to find your microwave's wattage
- Look at the label inside the door, on the back, or in the manual: it lists output power (e.g. "Output 1000 W"). Use output, not input power, which is higher.
- No label? Heat 1 cup (250 ml) of cold water on high. Boiling in about 2 minutes suggests 1000 W or more, about 3 minutes suggests 800 W, and 4 minutes or longer suggests 600–700 W.
- Compact and older microwaves are usually 600–800 W; most full-size models are 1000–1200 W.
Food safety
Always heat food until steaming hot throughout — 165 °F (74 °C) for leftovers and poultry. Let food stand for a minute after cooking so heat spreads evenly, and stir or rotate dense items. When in doubt, use a food thermometer rather than relying on time alone.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert 1100 watt microwave time to 700 watts?
Multiply the time by 1100 / 700 ≈ 1.57. For example, 2 minutes becomes about 3 minutes 9 seconds.
How long is 1 minute at 1000 W in a 800 W microwave?
1 minute × 1000 / 800 = 1 minute 15 seconds.
Does the power level setting change wattage?
Yes. Power level 5 (50%) on a 1000 W oven delivers about 500 W on average by cycling the magnetron. Use the effective wattage in the calculator.
Is the wattage conversion exact?
No. It is a good first estimate. Small portions and different oven designs vary, so check that food is hot throughout and add 15–30 seconds if needed.
What wattage do most microwave instructions assume?
Most US packages give times for 1000–1100 W ovens, often with a separate line for 700 W.
